Juan Hernaz
Artist / Hugo, Seville
JUAN HERNAZ (Gijón, Spain)
As a child, Juan was passionate about two things: Art and books, in that order. But he didn’t realize until many years later and after his degree in Fine Arts at the University of Salamanca (Spain), that he could combine both these passions into one art form. Soon after, Juan discovered the art of Chris Van Allsburg, and many other childrens’ artists and story tellers.
For Juan, art means dialoguing with the reader. He views illustration as a means for creating atmospheres, nuances and concepts that expand the meaning of the words and thus, beg for more readings. Through his art, Juan hopes to communicate his own perception of the text and hopefully, enable readers to expand and develop their own interpretations as well.
Juan has illustrated many universal classics including The Man Who Planted Trees and The Quixote. His books, Grandpa’s Suitcase and However Small It Seems, have been recognized with the International Picture Book Award ‘Ciutat de Benicarló’ (Spain) in 2016 and 2017 respectively. Juan has also illustrated books for notable authors Gonzalo Moure (Cervantes Chico 2017 award) and Wenxuan Cao (Hans Christian Andersen 2016 award).
Always invested in the industry, Juan collaborates regularly with different graphic studios and private clients around the world, developing thematic illustrations for selected projects including: Book covers, theater set designs, corporate, scientific and botanical illustrations. These projects include clients from US, UK, France, Israel, Turkey, China, and Singapore.
Juan enjoys every step of every work, every day.
